In a bold move, the Green Party of New Zealand has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize the country's energy sector and tackle the pressing issues of power affordability and energy security. Titled 'KiwiPower', this initiative aims to empower citizens and communities by promoting renewable energy and making clean power accessible to all.
The Vision for KiwiPower
Co-leaders Chlöe Swarbrick and Marama Davidson presented their energy policy at the symbolic Dunedin Gasworks Museum, a place that represents both the country's energy past and future. The plan centers around establishing a publicly-owned entity, KiwiPower, which will drive investment in renewable energy and ensure affordable power for all New Zealanders.
Affordable Power for All
One of the key promises is to make power bills more manageable. The party aims to achieve this by encouraging renters and homeowners to generate their own power through solar and battery installations. By providing zero-interest loans, they hope to make clean energy more accessible, with a focus on supporting up to 90% of homeowners. Additionally, the plan includes expanding the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant program to upgrade low-income homes, making them warmer, drier, and more energy-efficient.
Investing in Renewable Energy
KiwiPower will invest significantly in renewable energy projects, with a focus on solar power. The party plans to install solar panels on more than half of all public homes within four years, a move that will not only reduce emissions but also provide a more sustainable and affordable energy source for communities. Furthermore, they aim to invest in community energy projects, funded by reallocating subsidies from fossil fuel companies.
Addressing Market Failures
Swarbrick highlighted the market's failure to deliver affordable and secure renewable power, with four major power companies controlling over 85% of the market and reaping substantial profits. She emphasized the need for a fairer energy system, stating, "A warm, dry home powered by clean energy should be within everyone's reach."
A Fairer Energy Landscape
The Green Party's plan also includes reforms to pricing structures, ensuring that households and businesses with solar installations receive a fair price for the electricity they export back to the grid. Additionally, they aim to establish renters' rights to install solar, preventing unreasonable blocks on this initiative.
Investing in Māori and Public Housing
Marama Davidson emphasized the plan's focus on community ownership and investment in Māori and public housing. She highlighted the energy hardship faced by Tangata whenua, who are two to three times more likely to struggle with energy costs. "This is about rangatiratanga over energy and it is part of our enduring commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi," she stated.
