Jupiter's Moon Io Returns to Orbit in Maine Solar System Model (2026)

The Maine Solar System Model, a colossal and meticulously crafted representation of our solar system, has just received a significant upgrade. The latest addition is a recreation of Jupiter's moon, Io, which was installed on a tall, shiny black pole, joining the other moons of Jupiter at the model. This addition marks a full circle moment for the project, which has been a labor of love for Kevin McCartney, a University of Maine professor emeritus of geology. The model, spanning 150 miles, is the largest of its kind in the world, according to McCartney, who has been involved in its creation from the beginning. The project has attracted tourists and attention for over 25 years, with McCartney crediting the community's dedication and volunteer efforts for its success. The recent installation of Io, a golf-ball-sized sphere, was a collaborative effort involving MPG Truck and Tractor in Presque Isle, who stored and repainted the 15-foot pole, and High School students who painted the moon. Jessica Goodwin, an art teacher who helped paint the original Io in 2002, supervised the students, including her daughter, in bringing the new model to life. The model's scale is what makes it truly fascinating, with each celestial body carefully calculated to match its real-life counterpart in size and distance. The addition of Io completes the model, which now includes the eight planets, Pluto, and four dwarf planets, along with seven notable moons. The model's appeal extends beyond its scientific accuracy, as McCartney notes the significant number of visitors drawn to the area each year, with many returning to see the latest additions. The project's future plans include repainting Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, and McCartney is seeking volunteers to help with the ongoing maintenance and development of this unique and captivating attraction.
